A PlayBook for delivering WOW Projects

“The real-life DePodesta leaves baseball with a tremendous track record: He not only helped Billy Beane build those Moneyball A’s teams, oversaw the rebuild of the Dodgers’ farm system in two rocky years as the club’s GM, then helped turn the Mets from a cash-strapped perennial loser into the 2015 National League champion.” [1]

The key to winning at the game is to utilize a proven system that enables your team to achieve a competitive advantage. This system then becomes "the Playbook" on how to consistently deliver winning performances. In the building industry Glen Ballard and Greg Howell studied how the Toyota Team won at the car manufacturing game and developed a system called Lean Project Delivery (LPD).

The LPD system is based upon hand picking a team capable of delivering a championship performance, utilizing a system focused on productivity and collaboration to create value

To document how these and other lean projects were successful we decided to produce a Playbook so that there types of performances could be replicated . The Playbook when completed will include:

  • Strategies for delivering high performance buildings at less cost

  • Tools that improve decision making, eliminate waste and create value

  • The Target Value Design system

  • How to implement the Last Planner System (LPS)

  • How to establish collaborative work environments

In the Collaboration section we provide methods to get the players out of silos and performing as a team. It will include a TOOL BOX on how to:

Enhance Collaboration: Getting the Team together regularly for focused work sessions is needed to improve collaboration, decision making and productivity.

  • Establish a Collaborative Work Environment for regular focused work sessions

  • Utilize an Integrated Design Process (IDP) to achieve a best value design

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) can be used to improve the design process, as it helps the team visualize the project.

Solve Problems: The key to improving performance is to create a team culture of solving problems and eliminate constraints to productive work flow.

  • A3 Problem Solving: The A3 is a structured problem solving and continuous improvement approach used by lean practitioners.

  • 5 Why’s is a problem solving technique gets to the root cause of a problem. It helps to avoid putting band aid solutions in place

  • Implements 5S can help to solve problems with work space functionality. It involves straightening, standardizing, sorting, shining and sustaining the workplace.

Make Better Decisions: The best decisions are made when the team has a common understanding of lean principles and practices and participate in collaborative decision making.

  • Choosing by Advantages (CBA) is a decision making system that is used to choose between alternatives using a weighting system that is based upon value priorities

  • Creating a Study Action Teams (SAT) can enhance decision making by getting everyone on the same page on lean best practices.

  • Value Stream Mapping is used to analyze current workflow and to develop layouts and process improvements to achieve an ideal future work state.

Other good lean methods and tools that can be used to improve project outcomes that will be added to the toolbox as we further develop this Playbook. If you would like to be put on a mailing list for "the Playbook", please send me an email
